This keeps with the spirit of the original game, and most turn based games, by alternating evenly between not just players, but people.

First, players controlled by the same person cannot have back to back turns. While not required, we found the game was more fun with two additional tweaks to player control. More of the island is accessible from the beginning of the game, there are opportunities for trading, and the overall experience can even be more engaging than the four person game because each person takes twice as many turns!
#CATAN WITH 2 PLAYERS DRIVER#
There are many reasons for this, and the underlying driver behind all of them is that having four players on the board replicates the group dynamics of traditional Catan more effectively than by having two. While not perfect, I’m happy to report that after more games than I’d like to admit, Catan for Two plays like the group experience and only requires three modifications: 1. Our goal was to replicate the full group experience for two people while changing as few of the rules as possible. To our surprise, all of the two player variants we could find by googling “two player Settlers of Catan,” “Settlers of Catan for two,” and similar search strings sacrificed the core social element of the game, trading, to allow for a two player experience or radically changed the core rules. Over the holidays I found myself in this exact situation, with most of the family headed to bed after two rounds of Catan, while my father and I were ready to keep settling (our verb for the act of playing Settlers of Catan). While masterfully designed, Catan’s one major flaw is that you can’t play with two people out of the box. And the good news is you can, unless there are only two of you who want to go another round. Fun, n’est-ce pas? Now that you’ve played through at least once and understand the basics of the game, you may be feeling a strong desire to play again.
